The world today is beset by problems – endless warfare in the middle east has led to the rise of ISIS, the deaths of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of millions. Refugees seeking sanctuary in Europe are met only by razor wire fences or are left to drown at sea. At the same time the far right is on the rise across the continent – stoking fear and hatred. All of this is set against a background of prolonged economic crisis and austerity.
In Britain years of cuts to public services are set to continue. Income inequality has reached levels not seen in a century and 1 million families are reliant on food banks every year. Whilst corporations evade millions of pounds in tax and the richest are given tax breaks. The need for a political alternative has never been so pressing.
